6 Months of Braces

So in the last 6 months, I had 4 teeth taken out and ceramic orthodontic braces fitted. And I am so impressed with the progress so far! I thought it might be worth putting together what I have learnt/found so far.

  • Keeping your teeth clean is a task! Before braces my dentist would always comment on how clean my teeth were, so I was shocked at the amount of effort needed to keep my brace, and my teeth, really really clean.
  • Carrying a toothbrush and toothpaste is essential. Out of everything that I carry in my brace bag, these are the two main things that I need to keep with me. I keep these in whichever handbag I am using, even a night out handbag, because you just never know when you’ll snack/be out longer than you expected so need to eat a meal, and then you’ll need that toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • The progress is quick! Because I knew I wanted to track my teeth progress, I took pictures. And I am blown away by the changes. If you are struggling with the pain and discomfort of having a brace, take pictures. And if you haven’t had your braces fitted yet, definitely take some before pictures. I love how amazingly straight my teeth look now.
  • Leading on from that…the pain is worth it! Looking back at old photos and then taking a photo of my teeth when they are sore, it really helps put it into perspective. Yes does hurt having teeth taken out, having a brace fitted, having a brace tightened etc. But it hurts because it’s actually doing something. And in the end, when your brace comes off, it will be worth it.

Hi Laurie, interesting to hear about your ceramic braces. I can relate a little – I also had four teeth removed about 6 months ago and I have incognito braces, which are behind my teeth. They’re also pretty hard to notice, unless you yawn too widely! I seriously considered ceramic braces and now think it might have been the better choice, because these braces rub a lot and make your tongue very sore fairly often. Do the ceramic braces ever give you similar problems? Thanks!

Ahh, I wanted those type of braces, but because of how my teeth were I was told they weren’t an option for me. Ceramic braces are designed with softer edges so the brace brackets don’t cause me any irritation. Initially they did, but after a few days that passed. Have you spoken to your orthodontist to see if ceramic are an option to switch to?
